Egyptian Large Glazed Steatite Scarab, New Kingdom, ca. 1567-1085 B.C.

Originally glazed green, the color of fecundity, this scarab is decorated with a scene of a Nile god who kneels and presents a water vase atop an

offering tray from which hangs an open lotus blossom. A flourishing papyrus plant atop the deity's head further emphasizes the imagery of abundance

and fertility. At the bottom, a round-bottomed basket -- the hieroglyph for "all" -- provides compositional balance and, together with the other images,

expresses the wish that the scarab's owner be blessed with "all bounty." Drilled lengthwise. L. 1 1/4".
